The Royal Tenenbaums: Margot’s Butterscotch Sundae

I’ll have a butterscotch sundae, I guess.  You probably don’t even know my middle name.

Margot Tenenbaum, The Royal Tenenbaums

It’s been a while since I last saw The Royal Tenenbaums but there are a few things that never escape my mind.  Margot’s perfect hair and her butterscotch sundae that she ordered at The Grand Prospect Hall.  Much to my disappointment, The Grand Prospect Hall is only open for weddings and events.  Although we can’t stroll in for a visit, recreating her sundae is the next best thing.  Since it is a sundae, feel free to add nuts, sprinkles, and whipped cream to your heart’s content.  I wanted to keep it simple and beautiful.  Enjoy!

The Royal Tenenbaums: Margot’s Butterscotch Sundae

yield: 2       prep time: 5 minutes      total time 15 minutes

ingredients:

  • 1 pint good quality vanilla ice cream
  • 90g granulated sugar
  • 135g corn syrup
  • 20g butter
  • 40ml heavy cream, room temperature
  • 15ml whiskey
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 maraschino cherries

direction:

  1. In a pot, add your corn syrup and sugar.  Place over medium heat and bring the mixture to a light caramel color.  Immediately take it off the heat and add your butter, salt, and cream.  Stir to combine and finally add your whiskey.  Let it cool to room temperature.  If your mixture gets too thick, heat it up again and add 1-2 tbsp of heavy cream.
  2. Scoop your ice cream into two ice cold glasses.  Top with your butterscotch and cherry.
