Stop Motion: Mad Men’s 60’s Diet

Stop Motion: Mad Men's Betty Draper's Breakfast Diet

Stop Motion: Mad Men’s Betty Draper’s Breakfast Diet

This meeting can start to define what is a good week and a bad week in our lives. But there are good weeks and bad weeks for thin people, too. Coming to weight watchers is not just a chance to feel better about yourself. It’s a chance to share so that if, for example, you’re someone like me, you don’t stuff yourself just to keep from telling your family your problems. How was your week, everybody?

MAD MEN, SEASON 5, DARK SHADOWS

Losing weight has been number one on many people’s New Years resolution list and while I was thinking about dieting seen on screen, Betty from AMC’s Mad Men came to mind.  In season five, Betty gains considerable weight and we follow her through her journey to weight loss and many health concerns.  In reality, she was pregnant and they had her in a fat suit but it was still interesting to see what dieting was like in the 60’s.  This stop motion scene is from season five and it’s one of many food scenes from Betty.

While searching online for a 1960’s Weight Watchers plan, I came upon a few websites* that had the details of the diet plan and it was fascinating to see how much dieting has changed since then.  Let’s not forgot to mention that all the women were smoking during the Weight Watchers meeting! A typical breakfast would be exactly what I have photographed above, half a grapefruit, hard cheese, and a slice of toast. Note that it’s one slice of toast for women and two for men.
