DRACULA:  Here, just have some monster ball soup.  It’s your mommy’s recipe.

MAVIS:  Aw!  Thank you, dad.  Just like you made it when I was a kid.  My favorite.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2

Matzo ball soup is really great anytime of the year but now it’s especially perfect for the spooky Halloween season.  This monster ball soup is from the movie, Hotel Transylvania 2, starring Selena Gomez and Adam Sandler.  Although this movie came out in 2015, I’ve only seen the movies just a few weeks ago and it’s so much fun!  It’s definitely a movie I’m going to add to my Halloween movie list.

This matzo ball soup is incredibly easy to make so it’s important the presentation is perfect.  To make the eyes, I used a combination of cooked egg whites and sliced black olives.  The details on the face is carved out with a pairing knife and clay sculpting tools.  If you don’t have the tools, simply use a small pairing knife and carve out the details.  Serve the monster ball soup in a shallow bowl so the balls stand upright.  If you’re still having trouble with propping it up, cut the base flat so it sits more comfortably.  Please enjoy!

Servings 2 people

Ingredients

  • 3 whole eggs
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup water 4oz / 113g
  • 1 cup matzo meal 5oz / 142g
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 medium carrot, peeled small dice
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 hard boiled egg shelled
  • 1 black olive pitted
  • black and red gel food coloring optional

Instructions

  • In a bowl, mix together the eggs, oil, water, and meal until well combined. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 45 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a saucepan, bring the broth and carrots to a simmer over medium low heat.
  • Divide the matzo meal into 6 equal size pieces. Roll into circles and carefully dropped them into the simmering broth. Cook for 20 minutes.
  • Drain the matzo balls and let it cool. Once it's cool enough to handle, you can start to carve out the details of the face. Use an image from the movie to use as reference.
  • Remove the yolk from the hard boiled egg and cut the egg whites into the shapes of the eyes. It's ok if it's not perfectly cut. Gently push the egg white into the cavity you made for the eyes.
  • Thinly slice the black olives to create the blacks of the eyes. If you want, you can dilute some black and red food coloring to create more depth in the eyes.
  • Serve the matzo balls with the broth and carrots. Garnish with chopped parsley.
