Homer Simpson’s Patented Space-Age Out of This World Moon Waffles

The Simpson's: Homer's Moon Waffles

The Simpson’s: Homer’s Moon Waffles

Let’s see here, caramels, waffle batter, liquid smoke. Oooh, waffle runoff. Mmm, fattening.

The Simpsons

I first saw Homer’s moon waffles as a child and I remembered thinking that there was no way that that can possibly taste good.  The scene starts with Homer going into his refrigerator and grabbing waffle batter, caramel candies, and liquid smoke.  He dumps it all into his waffle maker and when finished, he wraps it around a stick of butter.  Mmm fattening.

My version is a lot tastier, I hope! It’s salted caramel waffles served with extra caramel sauce and butter.  I’ve omitted the liquid smoke and I took the caramel extra dark so it will mimic the smokiness from the liquid smoke.  Another option would be to actually smoke the waffles with wood chips but I imagine this would be a lot easier. Enjoy!

  • Servings: 4
  • Time: 30mins
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

Ingredients:
caramel sauce:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream, room temperature
  • 1 tsp salt

waffle:

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce + extra to serve at the end
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

directions:

  1. To prepare the caramel sauce, stir together the sugar and water in a small pot. Place over medium heat. Keep an eye on the sugar as it boils to ensure it does not burn. Take the sugar to a very dark amber color and immediately add the butter off the heat. Stir to combine. Add the salt and heavy cream and stir until combined. Let cool.
  2. Mix all your dries in one bowl and the eggs, caramel, milk, and vanilla extract in another. Set the melted butter aside until the end. Add the wets to your dries and fold it in gently while making sure not to over mix. Before the mixture is completely incorporated, add the melted butter and stir just until combined.
  3. Preheat the waffle iron according to the iron’s instructions. Serve warm with extra caramel sauce and if you want to stay true to Homer’s Moon Waffles, wrap it around a stick of butter. Personally, a little pad of butter on top is just enough for me!
