Rita makes the bread from scratch.  It’s the kind of thing they like the Martha’s to do.  A return to traditional values.  That’s what they fought for.

THE HANDMAID’S TALE

The Handmaid’s Tale: Martha’s Bread Recipe

There are SO many great shows out right etow and the one I’m completely obsessing over is Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale starring Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Alexis Bledel, and Yvonne Strahovski.  I had no idea what the show was about going into it but I’m such a huge fan of Elisabeth Moss (ESP Mad Men!) that I knew I would love it.  The show is inspired by the 1985 novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood.  I haven’t had the chance to read it yet but I’m so excited to add that to my reading list.

This loaf of bread is inspired by a scene in the first episode when Offred, played by Elisabeth Moss, walks into the kitchen while Martha is working.  This is a quick recipe and doesn’t require a bread starter so it can be easily done in an hour.  How amazing is that?  Please enjoy and let me know what you think of the show!

Prep Time 20 minutes mins
Cook Time 30 minutes mins
Total Time 50 minutes mins
Servings 1 loafs

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour (15.75oz / 446g)
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water, 110F

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar and let it sit for 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 400F.
  • After 10 minutes, the mixture should be foamy and bubbly. Add the flour, salt, and yeast and stir until it comes to a ball of dough. Cover and set it aside for 15 minutes.
  • On a floured surface, knead the dough until it is a smooth ball of dough. This will take around 5 minutes. Roll the dough into a loaf shape and place it into a loaf pan. Cover and set it aside in a warm area for 20 minutes.
  • Give the top of the loaf a light dusting of rice flour (this is optional). Score the op of the bread with a sharp knife and bake for 15 minutes or until the top of golden brown. Allow it to cool before cutting into it.

The directions do not say when to add the salt; I assume when you add the sugar, water and yeast. St any rate I am waiting for mine to cool to see what it tastes like minus the salt!! It’s beautiful tho

I’m so sorry I missed that! The salt should be mixed in with the flour but it’s not ruined if you added it in another step.
